Doris B. Myers

102 years old, Doris B. (Frame) Myers of Wheatfield passed away on March 6, 2024 at her home with her loving family around her.

 

Doris was born on November 24, 1921, to Harry E. and Ida B (Uhter) Frame, in Shelby, Indiana.  Graduating from Crown Point High School in 1939, Doris married Richard Myers in 1940 and had four children over the years.  At the age of 35 she began on the fulfillment of one of her dreams by attending Valparaiso University to earn a bachelor’s degree. She went on to earn a master’s in art education at Ball State University.  She taught at Wheatfield Schools for 9 years, then moved to the new Kankakee Valley High School where she taught Art for 14 years. She retired at age 65 to pursue another dream of being a full time practicing artist and lifelong student. Yet another dream was realized when she founded North Light Studio & Gallery at her home where she sold her paintings and pottery and the creations of her three daughters. 

 

Doris was also very active in her community, serving in many capacities and often promoting the arts and culture. She was a founding board member of the Jasper Newton Foundation serving several years. She was also a member of several organizations including The Wheatfield Chamber of Commerce, The Wheatfield Historical Society, Wheatfield American Legion Post 406 Ladies Aux., Friends of the Wheatfield Library, Jasper County Art League, Prairie Writers Guild, Prairie Arts Council, Chesterton Arts Center, Southshore Arts Association, and more.

 

Over the years Doris exhibited her artwork extensively, winning many awards, as well as being collected by individuals across the globe. Doris was also a writer and loved composing poetry and short stories. In the last few years she published two books, one of her poems, short stories, and artwork, called "Sunshine & Shade" and the other her autobiography entitled "Through Many Doors".  Doris continued to write and make art through her 102 birthday.



Doris is survived by her loving family, children: Connie Timm, Stanley Myers, Bonnie (Bill) Zimmer, Lana (Tom) Zimmer, 13 grandchildren, 26 + great-grandchildren, and 2 + great-great-grandchildren.


Doris was preceded in death by her husband: Richard, parents: Harry & Ida, siblings: Claudius Frame, Helen (Frame) Moeller, Harold Hildebrandt, Glen Frame, Shannon (Frame) Crepeau, son-in-law: Roger Timm, and daughter-in-law: Connie (Gourley) Myers.

 

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at the Boersma Funeral Home, 90 E. Grove St., Wheatfield, Indiana. Graveside service will take place on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Marcia Smith-Wood officiating at the Wheatfield Cemetery.
