Nickolas Bierma

82 year old, Nickolas Bierma of Wheatfield passed away March 22, 2002. (The night of the Catholic Church Fish Fry.)

On July 18, 1919, Nickolas was born to Cornelius ‘Corny’ and Effie Bierma in Platte, South Dakota. Nick has been a local resident since 1931. Nick graduated from Wheatfield High School, was in the Eurpean Theatre from 1940 to 1945 as a 1st Sargent. He returned home to marry Gertrude Pruis on April 13, 1934 in DeMotte, Indiana. After Gertrude’s passing in 1996, Nickolas married Arlene Patterson on June 12, 1999, in Holland, Michigan. Nick owned and operated Bierma Hardware since 1940. He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of DeMotte, American Legion Post 406, Wheatfield Lion’s Club, Wheatfield Fire Department for 45+ years, Justice of the Peace from 1946 to 1948, Clerk/Treasurer of Wheatfield Town for 12 years, K.V. School Board member for 12 years, Skel & Phil Gas from 1940 to 1990.

Nick is survived by his children: Dave (Kathy) Bierma, Doug (Barbara) Bierma, Daryl (Cherul) Bierma, Debbie (Jerry) Woudema, 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Nick is also survived by siblings: Harry (Jean) Bierma, Arthur (Virginia) Bierma, & ‘Sis’ Cornelis Longstreth.

Nick was preceded in death by his first wife: Gertrude, his parents, and 3 brothers: John, Edwin, and Marvin Bierma.

Friends are invited to visit with the family on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 from 2:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the Boersma Funeral Home, 90 East Grove St., Wheatfield, Indiana. Services for Nick will take place on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Paul Benes officiating. Interment will follow at the Wheatfield Cemetery with Military Graveside Services.
