78 year old, Sterling M. Pickens Jr., passed away April 13, 2024.
On April 21, 1945, Sterling was born in Deepwater, West Virginia, to Sterling Sr. and Goldie (Ramsey) Pickens. He graduated from high school, and joined the U. S. Air Force from 1964 until 1968. He married the love of his life, Naomi Kinder on March 3, 1966, in Deepwater, West Virginia. Sterling then began work at Bethlehem Steel, Burns Harbor, where he began as a laborer, and worked up to being a castor operator with over 33 years of service. Sterling enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger days. He liked going to the boats, and was an excellent care giver to his wife and her mother.
Sterling is survived by his son: Sterling ‘Lee’ Pickens, and siblings: Margaret (James) Brown, Becky Gravely, and Ernie (Donna) Pickens, siblings-in-law: Joanna Thompson, Fred (Sheryl) Kinder, Joseph Kinder, Jullinna Kinder, special mention to niece: Beverly (Delano) Scaife.
Sterling was preceded in death by his wife: Naomi, parents: Sterling Sr. & Goldie, sister: Brenda Denya and brother-in-law: John Gravely.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at the Boersma Funeral Home, 90 East Grove St., Wheatfield, Indiana. Services for Sterling will take place at 12:00 p.m. (noon) at the funeral home with Pastor Kenny Patrick officiating, interment will follow at the Wheatfield Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
