80 year old Verna Whited, of Valparaiso, passed away January 15, 2024.
Verna (Odle) Whited was born on October 10, 1943 to Lora and Charles Odle, Sr. in South Bend, Indiana. She was a 1962 graduate of Kouts High School. In 1965, she married the love of her life, Ted Whited. They spent every day together for 56 years until his death in 2022. Their incredible marriage was an inspiration to those lucky enough to witness it.
Growing up as one of eight children, Verna loved playing baseball. She wouldn't let something like wearing a dress stop her from getting on the field with the boys.
Verna was the loving mother to Jim and Jennifer. Family was the most important thing to her. She loved family cookouts and hiking with family and friends. Her home was host to countless gatherings, infinite laughter and fond memories. Guests always felt welcome.
Verna retired from Chase Bank, but couldn't stay retired long. We will never be certain if it was because she loved helping people, because she needed to stay busy or she just needed some time away from Ted, but after her retirement, she worked part time at Kohls and Menards over the years.
Verna was quiet and steadfast. She always had a smile on her face. She could not stay still and kept busy with several hobbies. She planted flowers every year at her cozy home on the cul-de-sac. She enjoyed bowling, hiking and cooking. Her world famous lemon bars were a family favorite. She loved animals and birdwatching; cardinals were her favorite. You could often hear her crooning to an Elvis tune.
In her last few years, Alzheimer's robbed Verna and her family of time and memories. It was difficult for her loved ones to watch her slip away. Even in the weeks before her death, Verna still smiled through her fear.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Virginia, Charles, Claude, Pamela, Patty and Delbert, and her amazing husband Ted. We are certain he is glad to greet his bride.
Verna is survived by her children, Jim and Jennifer, brothers Daniel (Connie) and Vernon (Donna), and a host of other family, friends and colleagues. When you see a cardinal, taste the zest of a lemon bar or see the kind and quiet smile of a stranger, think of Verna.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Alzheimer’s Association 225 N Michigan Ave Fl 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
