Howard 'Bernie' Marshall

88 year old, Howard ‘Bernie’ Marshall of DeMotte, passed away December 29, 2015 with his loving family around him.

On March 2, 1927, Bernie was born to Edward and Bessie (Cooper) Marshall in Kersey, Indiana. He was a lifetime area resident, who graduated from DeMotte High School. He served in the U.S. Navy. Bernie married Juanita Jewell Robbins on February 5, 1949 at the Jasper County Courthouse, Rensselaer, Indiana. Bernie worked as a Carpenter Construction Superintendent for Van Keppel, Tonn & Blank, and Hamstra Builder’s. Bernie helped to build the grade schools in Hebron, Lowell, Valparaiso, Chesterton, Thomas Jefferson Jr. High in Valparaiso, and Kankakee Valley High School at Wheatfield. He was a lifetime member of the DeMotte American Legion #440.

Bernie is survived by his children: Rick (Vikki) Marshall, Robin (Homer) Steele, Renee (Terry) Sherrett, and Ruth Howerton, 9 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents: Edward & Bessie, wife: Juanita, siblings: Maurice, Edward, Wayne, Ronald, Dale, & Helen.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at the Boersma Funeral Home, Wheatfield. Services for Bernie will take place at the funeral home on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. with Pastor Rodney Tolleson officiating. Military Flag Honors will take place after the service on Sunday. Military Graveside Rites will take place on Monday, January 4, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the DeMotte Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family.
